Early Life and Education
Thomas Bryant Cotton was born in Dardanelle, Arkansas. His father, Thomas Leonard “Len” Cotton, worked as a district supervisor for the Arkansas Department of Health, while his mother, Avis (née Bryant) Cotton, was a schoolteacher who later became a middle school principal. Cotton’s family has deep roots in rural Arkansas, having lived there for seven generations, and he grew up on the family cattle farm. He attended Dardanelle High School, where he played on the local and regional basketball teams, typically as a center due to his height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m).
After graduating high school in 1995, Cotton enrolled at Harvard College, where he majored in government and served on the editorial board of The Harvard Crimson, often voicing dissenting opinions from the liberal majority. His writings critiqued various “sacred cows,” including affirmative action. Cotton graduated magna cum laude in 1998 after just three years of study, with his senior thesis focused on The Federalist Papers. Following his time at Harvard, he began a master’s program at Claremont Graduate University but left in 1999, finding academic life too sedentary.
