Early Life and Education

Tim McGraw was born in Delhi, Louisiana, as the only child of Elizabeth “Betty” Ann D’Agostino, a waitress from Jacksonville, Florida, and Frank Edwin “Tug” McGraw Jr., a star pitcher for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. D’Agostino, a teenager at the time, moved to Louisiana during her pregnancy with McGraw and gave birth there. McGraw grew up believing his stepfather, Horace Smith, was his father and carried the Smith surname until discovering his biological father’s identity at the age of 11. Upon finding his birth certificate while searching for a school picture, McGraw learned that Tug McGraw was his father. Though Tug initially denied paternity for several years, the two developed a relationship when McGraw turned 18, and they remained close until Tug’s death in 2004.
