Born in Wellington on 16 August 1975, Taika David Cohen grew up in the Aro Valley suburb of Wellington and in Raukokore, a small town in the Bay of Plenty. His father, an artist of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui descent, and his mother, Robin Cohen, a schoolteacher with mixed European and Jewish heritage, shaped his diverse cultural background. Waititi identifies as both Māori and Jewish, calling himself a “Polynesian Jew,” though he was primarily raised with a connection to his Māori roots, while Judaism was not actively practiced in his household.
He describes himself as an atheist who values indigenous beliefs more. Waititi’s parents divorced when he was around five, and he was primarily raised by his mother.
