Club Career
Bender began playing football in 1993 with TSV Brannenburg’s youth setup. He moved to SpVgg Unterhaching in 1999 and remained there until 2002, when he joined the youth academy of 1860 München. Progressing through 1860 München’s youth ranks, Bender started on the U-14 team and quickly advanced. In November 2007, he extended his contract with the club until 2011. However, due to financial difficulties, 1860 München sold both Bender twins in 2009—Sven transferred to Borussia Dortmund, while Lars joined Bayer Leverkusen. During his time at 1860 Munich, Sven made 65 appearances and scored one goal.
Bender made his Bundesliga debut for Borussia Dortmund on September 19, 2009, against Hannover 96. He quickly secured a spot in the starting lineup, taking advantage of injuries to other midfielders. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on February 12, 2011, against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and subsequently extended his contract until 2017. The 2011 and 2012 seasons were particularly successful, with Bender playing a key role in Dortmund’s midfield and contributing to the team’s back-to-back Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal win in 2012.
