Early life
Wonder was born on May 13, 1950, as Stevland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan. She was Lula Mae Hardaway’s third of five children and her second child with Calvin Judkins. Wonder was born six weeks early, and this, combined with the oxygen-heavy environment in the hospital incubator, caused him to suffer from retinopathy of prematurity, a disorder that causes the retinas to separate and stunts eye growth, leaving Wonder blind. Wonder’s mother separated from his father when he was four years old, and the three of them relocated to Detroit. Wonder was a choir member at Whitestone Baptist Church, where he also started performing as a soloist at the age of eight. Later, his mother reestablished contact with the father of her first kid, whose last name also happened to be Hardaway.
Career
At the age of eleven, Wonder sang his own song “Lonely Boy” for Ronnie White of the Miracles in 1961. White subsequently brought Wonder and his mother to a Motown audition, where CEO Berry Gordy signed Wonder to the Tamla label. Little Stevie Wonder was the moniker producer Clarence Paul gave him before he signed. Wonder’s age was taken into consideration when the label drafted a rolling five-year contract, with royalties being held in trust until Wonder turned 21.
