Early life
Bowman was born in Montreal, Quebec, but relocated to Buffalo, New York when his father worked for the Buffalo Sabres. He went to Canisius High School and later graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1995 with degrees in Finance and Computer Applications. He resided in Keenan Hall.

Executive career
Stan Bowman (third from the left) was with other Blackhawks executives in June 2010. He started in 2001 as a special assistant for four seasons. Then, he worked two years as the director of operations. Later, he became assistant general manager. On July 14, 2009, he became the ninth general manager. He took over from Dale Tallon after being a special assistant for three years. On October 4, 2011, Bowman signed a contract through the 2015-16 season. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013, and 2015. In December 2020, Bowman was promoted to president of hockey operations after John McDonough was fired in April. His duties were shared with Jaime Faulkner, the new president of business operations.
On March 31, 2021, Bowman became the general manager of the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team for the 2022 Beijing Games. On October 26, Bowman left the Chicago Blackhawks due to an investigation regarding sexual assault by Brad Aldrich, a staff member. The investigator, Reid Schar, said Bowman not reporting the assault led to more abuse. Bowman also resigned as the team’s manager on the same day. Since 2012, he helped choose players and staff for USA Hockey. NHL announced on July 1, 2025, that Bowman, MacIsaac, and Quenneville could return to the league and sign with other teams.

Personal life
Bowman and his wife Suzanne have three children. He was named after the Stanley Cup, which his father won as the coach of the Montreal Canadiens just before Stan was born. Bowman was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2007, but the cancer went into remission after treatment. However, it returned in early 2008, leading to a stem cell transplant, radiation, and more chemotherapy. By 2013, the cancer was in remission again.
