The school participated in local championships organized by the Comité Interscolaire de Basket-ball Amateur (CIBA) and the Association de Basket-ball Interscolaire (ASI). In 2010, during the devastating Haiti earthquake, Labissière and his family’s home collapsed while they were inside. Although trapped under debris for three hours, they survived. Labissière suffered from numbness in his legs and was unable to walk for several weeks. After the earthquake, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to live with Gerald Hamilton, who ran the Reach Your Dream Foundation, a program designed to bring international athletes to the United States as prospects.

High School Career

Labissière attended Evangelical Christian School in Memphis, where he began playing varsity basketball in eighth grade. Initially, he had limited English proficiency and relied on a French interpreter for his classes. However, after three to four months, he became fluent in English. In 2014, he transferred to Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis for his senior year, but due to the move, the TSSAA ruled him ineligible to play for the school’s basketball team. Instead, he played for Hamilton’s Reach Your Dream Prep Academy, where he averaged 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game.

College Career

Skal Labissière was a highly rated five-star recruit and regarded as one of the top players in his class. He committed to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky (UK), where coach John Calipari offered him a scholarship before any other 2015 prospect, drawing comparisons to former UK star Anthony Davis. Heading into the 2015–16 season, Labissière was considered a potential number one pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. Over the course of the season, he played in all 36 games for the Wildcats, starting 18 of them, and posted averages of 6.6 points (on 51.6% shooting from the field and 66.1% from the free-throw line), 3.1 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and 15.8 minutes per game. On April 5, 2016, Labissière declared for the NBA Draft, forgoing the remaining three years of college eligibility.

Professional Career

Labissière was selected 28th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, becoming the highest-drafted Haitian player since Samuel Dalembert in 2001. His rights were traded to the Sacramento Kings on draft night, and he signed his rookie contract with them on July 15, 2016. Labissière made his NBA debut on November 5, 2016, scoring 8 points and grabbing 3 rebounds in 15 minutes during a 117–91 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. On February 23, 2017, he had a season-high 12 points in a 116–100 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

One of his standout performances came on March 15, 2017, when he scored a career-high 32 points (21 of which came in the fourth quarter) in a 107–101 victory over the Phoenix Suns. This made Labissière the first rookie from the 2016 draft class to score 30 points in a game, and he also recorded his first career double-double with 11 rebounds. He became the youngest player in Kings history to record a 30–10 game and only the fourth Kings player to do so as a reserve since the 1984–85 season.
