Early Life
Silverman was born in Bedford, New Hampshire, to Beth Ann (née Halpin) and Donald Silverman. Raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, she comes from a family with a rich history in the arts and activism—her mother was George McGovern’s personal campaign photographer and founded the New Thalian Players theater company, while her father worked as a social worker and ran a clothing store. The youngest of five children, her siblings include Reform rabbi Susan Silverman, writer Jodyne Speyer, and actress Laura Silverman. She is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent and identifies as nonreligious.
Silverman first tried stand-up comedy at seventeen in Boston, describing her performance as “awful.” After graduating from The Derryfield School in 1989, she attended New York University for a year but left to pursue stand-up in Greenwich Village.
