Russell Westbrook III was born in Long Beach, California, to Russell Westbrook Jr. and Shannon Horton. He grew up in Hawthorne alongside his younger brother, Raynard. During his youth, Westbrook shared a dream with his best friend, Khelcey Barrs III, of playing basketball together at UCLA. Barrs was a standout player by the age of 16 and had already attracted college scholarship offers. Tragically, in May 2004, Barrs passed away from an enlarged heart during a pickup game. Following the loss of his friend, Westbrook became even more driven to succeed in basketball, carrying Barrs’ memory with him by always wearing a “KB3” wristband in his honor.
