Ricky Gervais was born on June 25, 1961, at Battle Hospital in Reading, Berkshire. His father, Lawrence Raymond “Jerry” Gervais (1919–2002), was of French Canadian and Iroquois descent and grew up on a farm in Pain Court, near Chatham, Ontario, Canada. Lawrence moved to the United Kingdom while serving abroad during World War II, where he later worked as a labourer and hod carrier.
While in the UK, Lawrence met Gervais’s mother, Eva Sophia (née House; 1925–2000), during a wartime blackout. The couple settled in Whitley, Reading, and had four children. Eva passed away from lung cancer at the age of 74. Ricky is the youngest of the siblings: his brother Larry (1945–2019) was a schoolteacher; Marsha (born 1948) worked with children who have special needs; and Bob (born 1950) became a painter and decorator. Gervais has often spoken about how Bob influenced his early skepticism about religion, leading him to question the existence of God at around age eight.
