Early Life
Kadyrov was born in Tsentaroy, within the Checheno-Ingush ASSR, part of the Russian SFSR in the Soviet Union. He was the youngest of four children in the Kadyrov family. His father, Akhmad Kadyrov, who had been a leading separatist mufti, switched allegiance to Russia in 2000. Growing up, Ramzan sought his father’s approval, often emulating him. The Kadyrov family had long been influential in Chechen society, but their wealth was diminished after forced resettlement by the Russian Empire during the Caucasian War.
During the First Chechen War, Kadyrov fought alongside his father against Russian forces. Following the war, he became his father’s personal driver and bodyguard.
