Political Career

Christa Markwalder started her political career in Burgdorf as a member of the Young Liberals, serving on the city council from 1999 to 2002. She received an election to the Canton of Bern’s Grand Council in 2002. Her father, Hans-Rudolf Markwalder, did not win reelection at the same moment. In addition to being the president of the New European Movement Switzerland (NEBS), Markwalder serves on the board of the FDP Switzerland. She considers herself a “classical liberal” and is recognized as a supporter of the social or left-liberal wing of the FDP, as well as a force behind traffic concerns and the gradual legalization of cannabis use.
