Against Australia in February 2022, Thushara, a fast bowler with a slinging movement, made his debut for Sri Lanka in cricket. On December 26, 2015, he made his Sinhalese Sports Club first-class debut in the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament. In March 2018, he played in the 2017–18 Premier Limited Overs Tournament for Colombo Cricket Club, making his List A debut. He was selected by the Galle Gladiators in the first round of the 2020 Lanka Premier League. He was added to the SLC Greens squad in August 2021 in preparation for the SLC Invitational T20 League. November 2021 was the chosen month.
On December 26, 2015, he made his Sinhalese Sports Club first-class debut in the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament. On March 10, 2018, in the 2017–18 Premier Limited Overs Tournament, he made his List A debut for Colombo Cricket Club. He was selected by the Galle Gladiators in the first round of the 2020 Lanka Premier League. He was added to the SLC Greens squad in August 2021 in preparation for the SLC Invitational T20 League competition. After the players’ draft for the 2021 Lanka Premier League, he was chosen to play for the Galle Gladiators in November 2021. He inked a contract with the Galle Gladiators for the third Lanka Premier League season in July 2022.
International career
He was included in the Sri Lankan One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Zimbabwe in January 2022. He was included in the Twenty20 International (T20I) team for Sri Lanka later that month for their away series against Australia. On February 13, 2022, he played his first T20I match for Sri Lanka against Australia. He was included in the Sri Lankan One Day International (ODI) team roster for their home series against Australia in June 2022. He was included in the Sri Lankan T20I team for their tour of Bangladesh in February 2024. He became the fifth bowler from Sri Lanka to achieve a hat-trick in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) on March 9, 2024, during the third T20I. In T20Is, he also claimed his first-ever five-wicket haul.
