Gatwa was born on October 15, 1992, in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. His father, Tharcisse Gatwa, is a journalist from the Karongi District in Rwanda. The family fled Rwanda during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and relocated to Scotland. They initially settled in Oxgangs, Edinburgh, before moving to Dunfermline when Gatwa was 15. He attended Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School before moving to Glasgow, where he studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting in 2013. While at the Conservatoire, he worked at the LGBTQ+ club The Polo Lounge, where he started by handing out flyers and later became a go-go dancer. In 2022, he was honored with an honorary doctorate from the Conservatoire during the graduation ceremony.
