Early Life

Julie Chen was born in Queens, New York City, to Chinese immigrant parents. Her mother, Wang Ling Chen, grew up in Rangoon, Burma, while her father, David Chen, was born in China and fled to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War. Her maternal grandfather, Lou Gaw Tong, rose from humble beginnings in a rural village in Fujian province, China, to become wealthy through a grocery store chain and had nine wives and 11 children. Chen has two older sisters, Gladys and Victoria. She attended junior high school in Whitestone, Queens, and graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School in 1987. She then attended the University of Southern California, where she graduated in 1991 with a degree in broadcast journalism and English.
