Garth Brooks was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on February 7, 1962. He is the youngest child of Troyal Raymond Brooks Jr., a draftsman for an oil company, and Colleen McElroy Carroll, a country singer who recorded for Capitol Records and appeared on Ozark Jubilee. This was the second marriage for both of his parents, giving Brooks four older half-siblings. The family hosted weekly talent nights at their home in Yukon, Oklahoma, where all the children participated in singing or skits. It was during this time that Brooks learned to play the guitar and banjo.
While he enjoyed singing in family gatherings, Brooks was primarily focused on athletics. In high school, he played football and baseball and ran track.
