Nurul Islam Nahid was born on July 5, 1945, into a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Kashba in Beanibazar, Sylhet District. He began his education at Kashba Primary School. He then joined at Panchakhanda Hargovind High School, where he earned his Matriculation in 1961. His political career began while he was a student at Murari Chand College in Sylhet, and then at the University of Dhaka. He was elected president of the Bangladesh Student Union in 1970 and was a founder member of Jubo Union in 1976.

Career

Nahid was involved in student movements against military government in Pakistan, as well as the 1966 mass uprising, during the agitation against Ayub Khan. In 1991, Nahid was appointed as general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh. In 1994, he joined the Awami League and served as a Member of Bangladesh National Parliament from 1996 until 2001. From 2015 to 2017, Nahid served as vice-president of the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference. He was re-elected vice-president of the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference, which was held at the organization’s headquarters in Paris.

Nahid is married to a civil official named Zohra Jasmine. They have two daughters. The eldest daughter, Nadia Nandita Islam Tinni, is an assistant professor of linguistics at Dhaka University. She married Gonojagoron Moncho spokesman Imran H Sarkar, but they eventually separated. Their youngest daughter, Nazia Samantha Islam, works in the private sector.
