Mr. & Mrs. Mahi Movie Trailer

Review

Many workers often question their career choices, pondering about pursuing childhood dreams. ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’ delves into this but ends up being unrealistic. The movie features Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor as a married couple. However, it fails to fully explore their relationship as promised. Janhvi trained for two years for cricket, but the sport only has a brief appearance in the film. Hence, the movie has a good plot and acting, but feels incomplete, making viewers unsatisfied. The first half of the film is slow and long, setting up the story about a couple who prioritize their parents’ wishes over cricket. Mahendra shows frustration and challenges, while Mahima hides her dreams until a surprising moment in the movie.

It seems unlikely that a doctor would quit her job to play cricket after encouragement from her husband and criticism from her boss. Mahima has only played cricket in her neighborhood, like many Indian children. The movie makes it look easy to become an athlete, overlooking the hard work required. The story is strange because there’s no mention of Mahima being exceptionally talented at cricket before or showing dissatisfaction with her job before switching careers.

Rajkummar and Janhvi share convincing chemistry initially, but the juvenile writing quickly becomes cringeworthy. Mahendra, self-proclaimed loser, wins over Mahima, a qualified doctor, with his ‘honesty’. The rushed courtship between the couple, who seem to know very little about each other, feels outdated. A poignant moment in the film involves a conversation between Mahendra and his mother, played by Zarina Wahab, discussing the addictive nature of fame and the perpetual dissatisfaction of the current generation. This scene highlights Mahendra’s struggles as he tries to bask in his wife’s success, even resorting to creating embarrassing Instagram Reels.

Rajkummar Rao plays Mahendra, a complex character struggling with insecurity in various aspects of life. His strained relationship with his father affects his business endeavors. Seeking validation, Mahendra resorts to deceit without regret, a relatable flaw in today’s characters. Janhvi Kapoor, as Mrs. Mahi, excels in cricket but lacks emotional depth. Her character seems repetitive of previous roles, hindering her performance despite occasional resemblance to Sridevi. Janhvi should break free from the ‘nepotism’ label for improvement.

Among the side actors, Kumud Mishra is memorable as a dad disappointed in his son. Zarina Wahab impresses in her brief role. Janhvi’s on-screen parents, portrayed by Purnendu Bhattacharya and Yamini Das, also leave an impression. The director Sharan Sharma, known for ‘Gunjan Saxena’, doesn’t recreate the same success here. The cricket scenes lack excitement, and the emotions in the film feel scattered, making it hard to connect. The dark tone in the movie seems forced to evoke feelings. Though the songs are nice, they don’t add much to the story. Overall, ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’ falls short of expectations despite the team’s efforts.
