Early Life and Education
As the seventh of Edward and Nancy Pence’s six children, Mike Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana on June 7, 1959. He is Irish and German by birth. Pence attended Columbus North High School, from which he received his diploma in 1977. After graduating from Hanover College with a BA in history in 1981, he went on to Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis to receive a JD in 1986. Pence turned from Catholicism to become a born-again evangelist while attending college.
Career Beginnings
After graduating from law school, Pence started his own private legal firm. He initially got involved in politics in 1988 when he challenged Democratic incumbent Philip Sharp in a losing bid for Congress; in 1990, he attempted another unsuccessful run against Sharp. Pence started conducting talk shows on local Indiana radio stations, including WRCR-FM and WNDE, during this time. Beginning in 1995, he also served as the host of a weekly public affairs television program on the Indianapolis station WNDY.

US House of Representatives
Pence entered the 2000 US House of Representatives race and was eventually elected to the 2nd congressional district of Indiana. He belonged to the extreme right-wing Tea Party Caucus while he served as president from 2001 until 2013. He was chosen to serve as the House Republican Conference chairman in the beginning of 2009. During his twelve years in the House, Pence introduced ninety bills and resolutions, all of which were unsuccessful in becoming law.
Governor of Indiana
Pence won the Republican nomination to unseat term-limited incumbent Mitch Daniels in the 2012 Indiana gubernatorial contest. In the end, he defeated Democrat John R. Gregg in the most closely contested governor’s race in fifty years. When Pence took office as governor in early 2013, he enacted the biggest tax cut in Indiana history and pushed for increased financing for private school. Notoriety also followed him when he signed laws banning abortion. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act was one of his most divisive pieces of legislation, drawing harsh criticism from the business community, the LGBTQ community, and even some more centrist Republican Party members. Pence eventually changed the measure to forbid discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation in response to the protests.

| Controversies | • Criticism for the delay in supplying needles In 2015, H.I.V. was spreading explosively in Scott County, Ind.; however, Pence resisted health officials’ suggestion of supplying clean needles as he believed it would increase drug abuse.
