Michael Lynn Parson was born in Wheatland, Missouri, and grew up on a farm in Hickory County. He graduated from Wheatland High School in 1973. In 1975, Parson enlisted in the United States Army, serving six years in the Military Police Corps before being discharged in 1981 with the rank of sergeant. During his service, he attended night classes at the University of Maryland and the University of Hawaiʻi but did not complete a degree at either institution.
After returning to Hickory County in 1981, Parson began his career as a sheriff’s deputy and later became the first criminal investigator for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in 1983. He served as the sheriff of Polk County from 1993 to 2004. In 1984, Parson purchased a gas station, which he named Mike’s, and eventually expanded his business to own three gas stations in the area.
