Early Life and Education

Michael Alan Weiner was born in the Bronx, New York, to Benjamin Weiner, a Jewish immigrant from Russia, and Rae, his mother from Montreal, Canada. He grew up with two siblings, one of whom, his younger brother Jerome, was born with developmental disabilities and was unable to hear or speak. Jerome passed away in 1969. Savage’s father, who owned an antiques shop, died of a heart attack in 1970, and his mother passed away in 2003.

Savage graduated from Jamaica High School in 1958 and went on to attend Queens College, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1963. After college, he taught high school in New York City for several years. His first marriage, to Carol Ely in 1964, ended in divorce, and he remarried in 1967 to Janet, his current wife. During this period, Savage worked for Timothy Leary, the famous psychedelic drug advocate, as the keeper of a stone gatehouse on Leary’s estate in Millbrook, New York.
