Early Life

Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to George Bolotin, a local Democratic Party official, and Helen, a homemaker. He has a brother, Orrin, and a sister, Sandra. By the age of 7, Bolton was playing the saxophone and began writing songs at 9. At 14, he formed a group called the Nomads, which signed a singles contract with Epic Records when Bolton was 16. With his parents’ consent, he dropped out of high school and left home at 15 to pursue music, traveling cross-country along U.S. Route 66. During this time, he worked odd jobs, including as Paula Abdul’s babysitter.
