In Sindri, Bihar (now in Jharkhand), Meenakshi Seshadri was born on November 16, 1963, as Shashikala Seshadri into a Tamil Brahmin family. Under Vempati Chinna Satyam and Jaya Rama Rao, she received training in four Indian classical dance styles: Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi. She represented India at the Miss International 1981 pageant in Tokyo, Japan, after winning the Eve’s Weekly Miss India pageant in 1981 at the age of 17.
Career
Meenakshi starred with fellow rookie Jackie Shroff in Hero following a lackluster debut in Painter Babu. Meenakshi rose to stardom suddenly after the film became a smash. She was offered to co-star in a double part in Awara Baap alongside superstar Rajesh Khanna following the success of Hero, but the movie didn’t fare well at the box office. After that, she made appearances in a number of commercial movies, such as Love Marriage, Paisa Ye Paisa, and Lover Boy. Bewafai, her next hit movie, with Rajinikanth as the antagonist and reunited her with Khanna. Meenakshi married investment banker Harish Mysore in 1995, and the two retired from the film industry. They were married in New York both civilly and legally. The two children of the couple are a son and a girl. Meenakshi was a Plano, Texas resident. She imparted Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Odissi there. She performs with her students in fundraisers and charitable functions, such as the California convention of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI).
