Early life and education

Maya Lakshmi Harris was raised between Montreal, Quebec, and the San Francisco Bay Area after being born in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. She is the younger child of Donald Harris, an emeritus professor of economics at Stanford University who was born in Jamaica, and Shyamala Gopalan Harris (1938–2009), a breast cancer researcher who left Madras (now Chennai), India, in 1960. P. V. Gopalan, her maternal grandpa, worked for the Indian government as a career civil servant. She was brought up with Hindu and Baptist religious convictions, as was her older sister Kamala. Meena Harris was her only child, born when she was seventeen. In 1989, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley. Career

Following her graduation from Stanford Law School, Harris worked as a law clerk in the Northern District of California for United States District Court Judge James Ware. Harris began practicing civil and criminal litigation in 1994 when he joined Jackson Tufts Cole & Black, LLP in San Francisco. 1999 saw the firm’s dissolution. Harris worked at the University of San Francisco School of Law as an adjunct professor of law. In addition, she served as dean of the non-accredited Lincoln Law School of San Jose and taught contract law at the now-closed New College of California School of Law. She also taught gender discrimination at U.C. Hastings College of the Law. She was one of the youngest deans of a law school in the history of the US at the age of 29.

At PolicyLink, a national research and action institute committed to achieving social and economic fairness, Harris held the position of Senior Associate. In that role, she authored two national publications, arranged seminars on police-community interactions, and pushed for police reform.
