Wade was active in representing Tasmania in cricket and football during his formative years. Diagnosed with testicular cancer at the age of 16, he underwent two rounds of chemotherapy and was eventually declared cancer-free. Upon his return to the sport, Wade went on to participate in the 2006 U-19 World Cup for Australia, which took place in Sri Lanka.
Wade made his mark with Tasmania during the 2006-07 season in the Ford Ranger ODI series but played just one match for his home team. Realizing he was lower in the pecking order with Tim Paine as the first-choice wicketkeeper, Wade transitioned to Victoria in the 2007-08 season. Within two seasons, he established himself as the preferred option over the incumbent Adam Crosthwaite, rather than solely playing as a specialist batsman.
