Politics

Ms. Banerjee entered national politics in 1984 by winning a seat in the lower house (Lok Sabha) of the parliament, representing her home district in south Kolkata. After losing her seat in the 1989 elections, she made a successful comeback in 1991 and was re-elected until 2009. Throughout her parliamentary career, she held various administrative roles, including ministerial positions in railways, coal, and mines. Despite gaining prominence nationally, Mamata Banerjee maintained strong ties to her West Bengal roots. Known affectionately as ‘Didi’ (Big Sister), she connected with her supporters through her humble nature and straightforward opinions. Her vocal opposition to the communist regime in West Bengal garnered both praise and criticism.

Political influence in West Bengal

Disillusioned by perceived corruption within the Congress Party in 1997, Mamata Banerjee founded the AITC to challenge the CPI-M more directly in West Bengal. Despite facing initial setbacks, the party gained momentum after Banerjee’s 25-day hunger strike in 2006 protesting land acquisition for an automobile factory. This event marked a resurgence in both the AITC and Banerjee’s political influence in West Bengal.

Historic Victory

Her dedication to social justice and human rights matters received broad support, resulting in a significant win in the 2011 state parliamentary elections. This historic triumph marked the end of more than thirty years of communist governance in West Bengal, with Banerjee becoming the chief minister. She secured re-election in 2016 with an even larger margin, solidifying her role as a key political figure in the area. Despite facing internal challenges within her party in 2021, including the defection of several leaders, Mamata Banerjee led the way and achieved a substantial electoral success, even though she lost her own electoral district to a prominent opposition member. In addition to her political duties, she has pursued artistic endeavors by writing numerous books and creating a significant collection of artwork, the proceeds of which she has dedicated to various developmental and social initiatives. Banerjee’s creative abilities also encompass poetry, with her works in Bengali and English reflecting her diverse identity and cultural background.

Mamata Banerjee Achievements

Mamata Banerjee achieved her inaugural Lok Sabha victory in 1984 by prevailing over long-time communist leader Somnath Chatterjee in Jadavpur. During her time in the Congress party, Banerjee held roles as a junior minister in the Ministries of HRD, Youth Affairs, Sports, Women and Child Development. Following her appointment as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata has been acknowledged for effectively addressing the Maoist threat in the state.

Bharat Sevashram Sangha monk sends legal notice to Mamata Banerjee

Swami Pradiptananda from Bharat Sevashram Sangha (BSS) has sent a legal notice to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, asking for an unconditional apology within 48 hours after she mentioned him in connection with monks allegedly working for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The notice urges Banerjee to apologize publicly, retract her statement, and refrain from making further defamatory remarks against Pradiptananda.

The notice stated that failure to respond within four days would imply a desire to publicize defamatory content to harm Pradiptananda. It mentioned that Pradiptananda, also known as Kartick Maharaj and holding the position of BSS secretary in Aurangabad, Beldanga, and Payradanga, reserves the right to pursue legal action against Banerjee. In a statement on Saturday, Banerjee expressed her respect for most monks but criticized Kartick Maharaj for his involvement in politics and interference in elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused Banerjee of speaking negatively and issuing threats to ISKCON, RKM, and BSS in order to support Muslims and infiltrators, labeling them as the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s voter base. Modi stated that the chief minister is disparaging respected organizations under the influence of Muslim groups to gain votes. He criticized TMC for disrespecting Bengal’s heritage and culture, mentioning their derogatory remarks about Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Modi urged people to respond to TMC’s appeasement tactics through their votes during a rally in Bankura.
