Newey’s initial spouse was Amanda, who worked as a nurse, and together they had two daughters named Charlotte and Hannah. They tied the knot in 1983 but parted ways in 1989. Early life and career

He was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, on 26 December 1958, the son of Richard and Edwina Newey. His father worked as a veterinarian, and his mother served as an ambulance driver during the Second World War. He attended Repton public school where he was classmates with motoring journalist and writer Jeremy Clarkson. Newey left Repton at 16 following an incident at a Greenslade concert held at the school’s 19th-century Pears School Building, organized by the sixth formers, during which he raised the sound levels on the band’s mixer, causing damage to the building’s stained glass windows. Newey graduated with a first class honours degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Southampton in 1980. He then started his career in motorsport with the Fittipaldi Formula One team under Harvey Postlethwaite. Subsequently, in 1981, he joined the March team as a race engineer for Johnny Cecotto in European Formula 2 before transitioning to designing racing cars. His initial project, the March GTP sports car, was notably successful and secured the IMSA GTP title for two consecutive years.

CART Career

Bobby Rahal drove the March 86C chassis to victory at the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and secured the CART title. In 1984, Newey collaborated with Rahal at Truesports on the March Indy car project, leading to a lasting friendship that influenced their careers years later. Newey’s design, the March 85C, achieved success in the 1985 CART championship with Al Unser and the 1985 Indianapolis 500 with Danny Sullivan. Moving on to Kraco in 1986, Newey engineered Michael Andretti’s vehicle while his March 86C design triumphed at the 1986 CART title and the 1986 Indianapolis 500 with Bobby Rahal. Following a brief stint at Haas Lola in F1, Newey returned to March in 1987 as chief designer for Formula One after working with Mario Andretti at Newman-Haas.
