Gladwell was born in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His mother, Joyce (née Nation) Gladwell, is a Jamaican psychotherapist, while his father, Graham Gladwell, was a mathematics professor from Kent, England. At the age of six, his family relocated from Southampton to the Mennonite community in Elmira, Ontario, Canada. He has two brothers and spent his childhood in rural Ontario, where he attended a Mennonite church.
Research by historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. has shown that one of Gladwell’s maternal ancestors was a Jamaican free woman of color who was a slaveowner, and his great-great-great-grandmother was of Igbo descent from Nigeria. In the epilogue of his 2008 book Outliers, he discusses the fortunate circumstances that shaped his family’s history and contributed to his success. Gladwell has often credited his mother as his role model as a writer.
