Early Life and Background
Born on February 17, 1995, in Rock Island, Illinois, Madison Keys is the daughter of Rick and Christine, both attorneys. Her father was also a Division III All-American basketball player at Augustana College. She has an older sister, Sydney, and two younger sisters, Montana and Hunter, none of whom play tennis. Keys developed a passion for tennis at a young age, sparked by watching Wimbledon on television when she was just four years old. She requested a white tennis dress like the one worn by Venus Williams, and her parents agreed to buy it if she started playing tennis.
Keys began playing at the Quad-City Tennis Club in Moline and started taking lessons regularly at age seven. By age nine, she was competing in tournaments. At ten, she moved to Florida with her mother and younger sisters to train at the Evert Tennis Academy, founded by John Evert and partly run by Chris Evert, a Hall of Famer. John Evert initially described Keys as “very athletic, a raw talent physically” who needed refinement in her strokes. Keys recalled that her early playing style was quite different from her professional game, as she preferred to rush the net rather than engage in long rallies. Despite this, her coaches held high expectations for her future success.
