Early life

Minnelli was born on March 12, 1946, at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Hollywood. She is the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincent Minnelli. Her parents called her after Ira Gershwin’s song, “Liza (All the Clouds’ll Roll Away)”. Minnelli has a half-sister, Lorna, and a half-brother, Joey, from Garland’s marriage to Sid Luft. She has another half-sister, Christiane Nina Minnelli (nicknamed Tina Nina), from her father’s second marriage. Minnelli’s godparents were Kay Thompson and Ira Gershwin. Minnelli’s first film appearance came at the age of three, in the concluding scene of the musical In the Good Old Summertime (1949), which starred Garland and Van Johnson. She went to New York City in 1961 and attended the High School of Performing Arts, followed by the Chadwick School.

Career

Minnelli spent 1961 as an apprentice at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, Massachusetts. She sang in the chorus of Flower Drum Song and played the character Muriel in Take Me Along. She began her professional career in 1963, at the age of 17, in an Off-Broadway version of the musical Best Foot Forward, for which she received a Theatre World Award, and then toured in The Fantasticks, opposite Elliott Gould. The following year, her mother persuaded her to join her for a show at the London Palladium. Both concerts were captured and compiled into one CD. Minnelli spent one year at Scarsdale High School, where he starred in a play of The Diary of Anne Frank that toured Israel. At the age of 19, she made her Broadway debut as a leading actress in Flora the Red Menace, earning her first Tony Award. It was her first time working with the musical duo John Kander and Fred Ebb.

Minnelli has a long history of drunkenness and prescription drug addiction, which began when her mother died with a Valium prescription. Andy Warhol, in a 1978 diary entry, underlined Minnelli’s usage of recreational drugs in the 1970s, recalling her arriving at Halston’s house and urging the host to “Give me every drug you’ve got.” Minnelli, like Warhol and Bianca Jagger, frequented New York City nightclubs in the late 1970s, notably Studio 54.
