Early life and Education

Chapman was born in Cleveland, OH. She was reared by her mother, who purchased her a ukulele when she was three. Her parents were divorced when she was four years old. She started playing guitar and writing songs at the age of eight. She thinks that she may have been originally inspired to play the guitar by the television show Hee Haw. In her native Cleveland she faced repeated bullying and racially motivated assaults as a child. She was raised as a Baptist and attended an Episcopal high school before being accepted into the A Better Chance program, which sponsors students in college preparation high schools outside of their home areas. She graduated from Wooster School in Connecticut and went on to Tufts University, where she studied Anthropology. As a Tufts student, she busked.

Career

On May 3, 1985, Chapman made her significant stage debut as the opening act for women’s music pioneer Linda Tillery at Boston’s Strand Theatre. Brian Koppelman, another Tufts student, heard her playing and brought her to his father’s attention, Charles Koppelman, by presenting him a demo tape he had taken from her campus radio station including the song “Talkin’ ’bout a Revolution”. Charles Koppelman, who ran SBK Publishing, signed her in 1986. After graduating from Tufts in 1987, he assisted her in signing a contract with Elektra, where she released Tracy Chapman (1988). The record received critical acclaim, and she began traveling and establishing a fan base. “Fast Car” began to ascend on the US charts shortly after she performed it at the televised Nelson.

Personal life

Although Chapman has never spoken publicly about her sexual orientation, writer Alice Walker has stated that she and Chapman were in a romantic relationship in the mid-1990s. Chapman keeps her personal and work lives strictly apart. “I have a public life that’s my work life and I have my personal life” , according to her. “In some respects, the decision to keep the two things distinct is relevant to the work I perform.
