Early Life
LiAngelo is the second son of LaVar and Tina Ball (née Slatinsky), both former college basketball players. LaVar, who stands 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 m), played for Washington State and Cal State Los Angeles. Tina, who is 6 feet tall (1.83 m), also played at Cal State Los Angeles. LaVar later played professional football as a tight end for the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.

The team lost in overtime to Centennial High School in the Southern California Regional Division I final. As a sophomore, LiAngelo was part of a team with his brother Lonzo and their cousin Andre Ball. LiAngelo suffered a foot injury before the season and missed a tournament at Fairfax High School in June 2014. However, he returned to form later in the year, scoring 35 points with seven three-pointers at the Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic. In December 2014, he scored 53 points in a 111–80 victory over Dorsey High School.
