He began his career at Airdrie United’s youth academy before moving to Celtic in 2011, where he achieved fame by scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory against Barcelona in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League. Following his time at Celtic, Watt was loaned to Lierse in the Belgian Pro League before ultimately joining Standard Liège.

International career
Watt made appearances for the Scotland U19s, with his first match on 12 May 2011 resulting in a 1–0 loss to Denmark. His inaugural goal was scored on 23 September 2011 during a 3–1 win against Wales. Following his debut with Celtic, Scotland U20s manager Billy Stark expressed his desire to promote Watt to the U20s team. Watt’s Scotland U21s debut took place in August 2012 in a friendly against Belgium. He played a total of nine games for the U21s, netting five goals. In May 2013, Watt was selected by Gordon Strachan for the senior Scotland squad for a World Cup qualifier. Despite being called up, Watt did not play in the match against Croatia due to fitness concerns raised by manager Billy Stark, which also led to his removal from the U21 squad. Subsequently, Watt was called up to the senior Scotland squad for a friendly against Czech Republic in March 2016. He made his debut during the match, coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute, which resulted in a 1–0 victory for Scotland.
