Early Life

North Korean officials and state media state that Kim Jong Un was born on January 8, 1982, but South Korean intelligence suggests his actual birth year may be 1983. The U.S. government lists his birth year as 1984, based on the passport he used while studying in Switzerland. It is believed that his official birth year was altered for symbolic reasons: 1982 marked the 70th birthday of his grandfather Kim Il Sung and was 40 years after the official birth of his father, Kim Jong Il.

Kim is the second of three children of Ko Yong-hui and Kim Jong Il. His elder brother, Kim Jong Chul, was born in 1981, and his younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, is thought to have been born in 1987. He is the first North Korean leader to be born a North Korean citizen, as his father was born in the Soviet Union and his grandfather was born during the Japanese colonial period.

On February 26, 2013, Kim met former NBA player Dennis Rodman, leading to speculation that Rodman was the first American Kim had ever met. During this visit, Vice magazine correspondent Ryan Duffy noted that Kim came across as “socially awkward” and tended to avoid making eye contact. Cheong Seong-chang from the Sejong Institute observed that Kim Jong Un appears more interested in the welfare of his people and interacts with them more frequently than his father did. South Koreans who encountered Kim during the April 2018 summit described him as straightforward, humorous, and attentive.
