Early Life

Tyson Smith was born on October 16, 1983, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in the Transcona neighborhood of Winnipeg. As of 2016, his mother worked in family services, while his father was employed by the Canadian government as a transport officer. He has a younger sister. Smith developed an early interest in professional wrestling, watching tapes of WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, which quickly became his favorite show. In addition to his wrestling interest, Smith played ice hockey as a goalie during his childhood. He also worked at various retail jobs, including at IGA and Costco.

Smith’s desire to pursue a career in professional wrestling sparked when a friend from Transcona Collegiate Institute (TCI) began training with Top Rope Championship Wrestling (TRCW) in Winnipeg. Omega made his debut in 2001 with Winnipeg-based Premier Championship Wrestling (PCW), where he won the PCW Heavyweight Championship in 2003 and the PCW Tag Team Championship in 2004. He also competed for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), unsuccessfully challenging Petey Williams for the TNA X Division Championship at the National Wrestling Alliance’s 56th Anniversary Show in October. Omega went on to win the Premier Cup and the NWA Canada X-Division Championship in June 2004 after defeating Nate Hardy, Chris Sabin, and Amazing Red in an eight-man tournament.

In 2005, Omega competed in World League Wrestling, managed by Harley Race, and faced Keith Walker in a losing match.
