Early Life
Perkins was born in Nederland, Texas, and raised by his grandparents on a farm. His mother tragically passed away when he was five, and his father, who played professional basketball in New Zealand, did not have a significant presence in his life. Perkins attended a private Catholic school starting in the sixth grade. His grandfather’s enthusiasm for sports ignited his competitive spirit, and Perkins also played football as a defensive end and baseball as a first baseman, though he quit both sports by high school.
Perkins first encountered LeBron James in the seventh grade when they played against each other in AAU competitions. The two later became friends and teammates at the ABCD Camp. Perkins was ranked No. 3 on the AAU circuit during his eighth-grade year, behind LeBron James at No. 1 and Chris Paul at No. 2. Perkins experienced a significant growth spurt between eighth and ninth grade, growing from 6’5″ to 6’10”. He dunked for the first time during a game in seventh grade.
High School
Perkins graduated from Clifton J. Ozen High School in Beaumont, Texas, in 2003. He led the team to four consecutive district championships and one state title during his high school career. In his senior year, Perkins averaged 27.5 points, 16.4 rebounds, and 7.8 blocked shots per game, leading Ozen to a 33–1 record. The only loss that season was a defeat in the state 4A championship game to Fort Worth Dunbar. After his senior season, Perkins was selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game. Ranked as a five-star recruit by Rivals.com, Perkins was considered the No. 3 center and the No. 6 overall player in the nation in 2003. Originally committed to play for Memphis, he ultimately chose to forgo college and entered the NBA directly out of high school.
Professional Career
Perkins was drafted 27th overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, but he was immediately traded to the Boston Celtics along with Marcus Banks in exchange for Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones. During his second season, Perkins saw increased playing time and quickly gained a reputation as one of the Celtics’ toughest players. In his early years, he played a limited role, often serving as the team’s “enforcer.” One memorable moment occurred during the 2005 Eastern Conference first round against Indiana in Game 6, where Paul Pierce was ejected, but Perkins was selected to shoot two crucial free throws with the game tied. Unfortunately, he missed both attempts, but the Celtics eventually won the game in overtime.
