Sampson was born in the Lumbee Native American community of Deep Branch in Robeson County, North Carolina. He excelled both academically and athletically during his high school years at Pembroke High School in Pembroke, North Carolina. Sampson was the captain of his high school basketball team for two years and played for his father, John W. “Ned” Sampson, who was known for driving the Ku Klux Klan out of Maxton, North Carolina, an event celebrated by the Lumbee as the Battle of Hayes Pond. After high school, Sampson went on to play basketball and baseball at Pembroke State University (now UNC Pembroke).

As a senior, he served as team captain for the basketball team and earned four letters in basketball and three in baseball. He was also consistently named to the Dean’s List and received the Gregory Lowe Memorial Award as the outstanding physical education major in his senior year. Sampson graduated with degrees in health and physical education and political science.
