Like Starmer, his wife, Victoria (formerly known as Alexander) Starmer, whom he married in 2007, has a legal background as a solicitor. She is currently employed in occupational health for the NHS. The couple resides in North London with their son and daughter. Starmer commenced his professional journey in 1987 when he began working as a barrister at the Middle Temple, one of London’s prestigious Inns of Court. By 2002, he had been granted the title of Queen’s Counsel. From 2008 to 2013, he held the positions of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), where he oversaw a number of noteworthy cases. One of his noteworthy decisions during this period was the controversial choice not to prosecute media personality Jimmy Savile, a move that faced significant scrutiny.

Political Career

In the 2015 general election, Keir served as the Labour Party candidate for Holborn and St. Pancras. Initially shadow home secretary, he resigned in 2016 but later took on the role of shadow Brexit secretary. Labour suffered a significant loss in the 2019 general election. Starmer became the Labour leader in 2020 after this defeat. Under his leadership, the party moved from the left-wing stance of Jeremy Corbyn towards the center.

Throughout his time as DPP, Starmer encountered the Jimmy Saville case, leading to intense scrutiny of the CPS’s choice not to pursue charges against Savile. In 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson blamed Starmer for this decision, a claim widely seen as politically driven. More recently, Starmer received criticism for accepting former Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke into the Labour Party, sparking concerns about his dedication to combating violence against women and girls.
