His father, James Alter (1922–2014), owned a refrigeration and air-conditioning business, while his mother, Joanne (née Hammerman) (1927–2008), was a pioneering political figure, being the first woman in the Chicago area to be elected to public office and serving as an elected commissioner of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago and a member of the Democratic National Committee. Alter graduated from Phillips Academy in 1975 and went on to earn his degree from Harvard University in 1979, where he was one of the lead editors for the Harvard Crimson.
