Early Life
John Oliver was born in the Erdington area of Birmingham, England, to Carole, a music teacher, and Jim Oliver, a school headmaster and social worker. His mother hailed from Liverpool, while his father was from the Wirral. He has a younger sister who resides in Australia and is the nephew of composer Stephen Oliver. Raised in Bedford, Oliver attended Mark Rutherford School, where he learned to play the viola.
Brought up in the Anglican faith, Oliver experienced a crisis of faith at age 12 following the deaths of a close friend and an uncle, which left him disillusioned with the church. In the late 1990s, he attended Christ’s College, Cambridge, studying English and becoming active in the Cambridge Footlights, a renowned student comedy troupe. Among his contemporaries were comedians David Mitchell and Richard Ayoade.
