John Mulaney Biography: John Edmund Mulaney (born August 26, 1982) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, Mulaney gained fame as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013, where he co-created the beloved character Stefon with Bill Hader. He has since hosted SNL multiple times and joined the exclusive Five Timers Club in 2022. Mulaney’s stand-up specials include The Top Part (2009), New in Town (2012), The Comeback Kid (2015), Kid Gorgeous (2018), and Baby J (2023). He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for Kid Gorgeous and Baby J. In 2019, he released the children’s musical comedy special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix. He created and starred in the short-lived Fox sitcom Mulaney (2014–2015) and performs as George St. Geegland in a comedic duo with Nick Kroll. Together, they appeared in the Broadway show Oh, Hello (2016–2017).

Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. He comes from a family of lawyers; his mother, Ellen Mulaney, is a professor at Northwestern University, while his father, Charles “Chip” Mulaney Jr., is a partner at a prominent law firm. Both parents have Irish Catholic roots. Mulaney has a rich family history, with notable relatives including a Republican mayor of Salem, Massachusetts, and a U.S. congressman. His parents attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School, where they were contemporaries of future president Bill Clinton, whom Mulaney has mentioned meeting in 1992.
Growing up as the third of five siblings, Mulaney was an altar boy and has an older sister, an older brother, a younger sister, and a younger brother who died at birth. He chose the confirmation name Martin to honor his late brother. Mulaney discovered his passion for show business at the age of five, inspired by the character Ricky Ricardo from I Love Lucy.
