McCarthy was born on November 1, 1972, at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. Raised in a working-class Catholic family, she has German, Irish, and Polish heritage and grew up in the West Elsdon neighborhood of Chicago. She is the second of four daughters, with sisters named Lynette, Joanne, and Amy; actress Melissa McCarthy is her cousin. Encouraged by their parents, Dan and Linda McCarthy, to engage in sports, each sister pursued different athletic activities. Jenny played softball, while her sisters took part in track and basketball.
During her teenage years, McCarthy attended Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School, where she later appeared in Playboy wearing the school’s sweater.
