Born in Rye, New York, Bateman moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of four and later to California. His mother, Victoria Elizabeth, was a flight attendant for Pan Am and hailed from Shrewsbury in the United Kingdom, while his father, Kent Bateman, is an American actor, writer, and director in film and television. His older sister is actress Justine Bateman.

Like many child actors, Bateman attended Brighton Hall School but did not graduate. In an interview with Wired Magazine, he revealed that he never received his diploma because he missed his finals while filming Teen Wolf Too. Bateman mentioned in Best Life magazine that he and Justine supported their family with their earnings, and he was managed by his father until he turned 20, when they ended their professional relationship.
