Born in Rye, New York, Bateman moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of four and later to California. His mother, Victoria Elizabeth, was a flight attendant for Pan Am and hailed from Shrewsbury in the United Kingdom, while his father, Kent Bateman, is an American actor, writer, and director in film and television. His older sister is actress Justine Bateman.
