Early Life and Education
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, David Olusoga is the son of a Nigerian father and a British mother. At the age of five, he moved to the UK with his mother and was raised in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, where he was one of the few non-white residents on his council estate. By the age of 14, his family had been targeted by the National Front multiple times, requiring police protection and ultimately leading them to leave due to the racism they faced. He later studied the history of slavery at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1994 with a BA (Hons) in History, and subsequently completed a postgraduate course in broadcast journalism at Leeds Trinity University.

This award is among BAFTA’s highest accolades, recognizing significant contributions to film, games, or television.
Olusoga’s notable works include presenting the history series A House Through Time (BBC Two), writing and presenting Black & British: A Forgotten History (BBC Two), and the BAFTA-winning documentary Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners. In recent years, he has conducted major interviews, including one with former U.S. President Barack Obama, and delivered the MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival in 2020. Olusoga remarked, “It is humbling to have my work in television, both as a producer and presenter, recognized in this way.”
