Ismail Haniyeh Biography- Ismail Haniyeh, born on January 29, 1963, and passed away on July 31, 2024, served as the political leader of Hamas, the governing body in the Gaza Strip since 2007. He resided mainly in Qatar from 2017 until his death in 2024. Haniyeh was born in a refugee camp in Gaza in 1963. His parents fled during a war. He earned a degree in Arabic literature in 1987. Haniyeh got involved with Hamas during protests against Israeli occupation. He was jailed three times for his participation. After being released in 1992, he went to Lebanon but returned to Gaza later. Haniyeh became a dean at the Islamic University and then led a Hamas office in 1997, moving up within the organization.

Finally, he was allegedly assassinated in Iran in July 2024 by Israel.

Death
Iranian state media announced on July 31, 2024, that Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran while participating in president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian’s inauguration. Hamas claimed he was assassinated in a “Zionist” airstrike at his residence, along with one of his bodyguards.

Early life and Education
Ismail Abdulsalam Ahmed Haniyeh was born into a Muslim Palestinian family in the al-Shati refugee camp in the Egyptian-occupied Gaza Strip. His parents were displaced from Ashkelon during the 1948 Palestine war when Israel was established. During his youth, he worked in Israel to provide for his family, attended United Nations–run schools, and earned a degree in Arabic literature from the Islamic University of Gaza in 1987. He became associated with Hamas while in university, serving as the head of the students’ council representing the Muslim Brotherhood from 1985 to 1986. Additionally, he played as a midfielder for the Islamic Association football team. His graduation coincided with the outbreak of the First Intifada against the Israeli occupation, during which he took part in protests against Israel.

Early activism

On May 20, 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan requested an arrest warrant for Haniyeh and other Palestinian and Israeli leaders as part of the ICC investigation in Palestine. The warrant was based on various charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Israel-Hamas war.
