Howard Allan Stern was born on January 12, 1954, in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, New York City. He is the second child of Ben Stern (1923–2022) and Ray (née Schiffman) Stern (born 1927), both of whom were Jewish, with family roots in Poland and the former Austria-Hungary. Ray initially worked as an office clerk in New York City before becoming a homemaker and later an inhalation therapist. Ben served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed on Long Island and in California.
After the war, he worked as a radio engineer at WHOM in Manhattan and later co-owned Aura Recording Inc., a Manhattan studio that produced commercials and cartoons. Stern has described his older sister Ellen as his polar opposite—quiet and reserved. In 1955, the family moved to Roosevelt, Long Island, where Stern attended Washington-Rose Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior-Senior High School. He also went to Hebrew school, where he received the Hebrew name “Tzvi.”
