Early Life and Education

Fry was born in Harlow and is the middle child of three daughters, with English and Irish roots; her father worked in a factory while her mother was a homemaker from Ireland. At around age 11, her mother had her solve a page of math problems daily during the summer break, which helped her excel in the following school year. She attended Presdales School in Ware, Hertfordshire, where a teacher inspired her to pursue mathematics. Fry graduated from University College London (UCL) and completed her PhD in 2011, submitting a thesis on the Navier–Stokes equations from UCL’s Department of Mathematics.

Hannah Fry joined University College London (UCL) as a lecturer in 2012.
