Early Life
Neill was born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, to Priscilla Beatrice (née Ingham) and Dermot Neill. His father, a second-generation New Zealander and army officer, was stationed in Northern Ireland at the time of his birth, while his mother was English. Neill’s great-grandfather, Percival “Percy” Neill, moved from Belfast to Melbourne before settling in Dunedin, New Zealand, where he worked as a wine merchant. In 1954, the Neill family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, where they lived in Cashmere. Sam attended Cashmere Primary School and then Medbury School, a private preparatory institution.
At school, he began calling himself “Sam” to distinguish himself from several classmates named Nigel, as he felt “Nigel” sounded too effete for a New Zealand playground. From 1961, he attended Christ’s College in Christchurch and later studied at the University of Canterbury. Unsure of his career path, he considered law but initially struggled, failing all four law units in his first year. During this time, he participated in several plays, including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Ngaio Marsh.
