George Stephanopoulos was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. His parents were of Greek descent. His father was a Greek Orthodox priest and dean emeritus in New York City. His mother directed the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America National News Service for years. After living in Purchase, NY, Stephanopoulos moved to Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Orange High School in Pepper Pike in 1978. In 1982, he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at Columbia University in New York. Stephanopoulos excelled academically and received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship. He was involved in sports broadcasting for the university’s radio station, 89.9 WKCR-FM.
