Wiest was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her mother, Anne Stewart, was a nurse, and her father, Bernard John Wiest, served as a college dean and a psychiatric social worker for the U.S. Army. The couple met in Algiers. Wiest has two brothers, Greg and Don.
